2022 trade data: US renewable diesel imports down 33%, biodiesel imports rise 23%, exports up 65%



The U.S. imported nearly 513 million gallons of biobased diesel last year, totaling 512.6 million gallons of both biodiesel and renewable diesel imports, according to new data by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Total U.S. imports of biobased diesel in 2022 were down 14 percent from 2021.


U.S. renewable diesel imports last year totaled 262.7 million gallons.



Most of this renewable diesel, 258.3 million gallons, arrived from Singapore. Another 3.95 million gallons came from the Netherlands. In addition, the U.S. received its first shipment of renewable diesel from United Arab Emirates last year, totaling 420,000 gallons.



Total U.S. renewable diesel imports in 2022 were down roughly 33 percent compared to the 2021 volume of approximately 392 million gallons.


Biodiesel imports into the U.S. totaled nearly 250 million gallons in 2022, hitting 249.9 million gallons, up 23 percent from 2021’s volume of 203 million gallons.



Nearly 123.4 million gallons of U.S. biodiesel imports in 2022 came from Canada, down slightly from the approximately 129 million gallons the year prior.



Germany secured second place for U.S. biodiesel imports last year, having shipped nearly 77 million gallons to the U.S. in 2022—an increase of 185 percent compared to the 27 million gallons Germany exported to the U.S. in 2021.



Approximately 20.6 million gallons of biodiesel from Spain entered the U.S. in 2022, down just 1 million gallons from its 2021 total exports to the U.S. of 19.6 million gallons.



More than 12.5 million gallons of biodiesel entered the U.S. from South Korea in 2022, down 48 percent from 24 million gallons the year before.



Italy shipped more than 12.4 million gallons of biodiesel to the U.S. last year, up 265 percent from the 3.4 million gallons exported to the U.S. in 2021.



Rounding out last year’s U.S. biodiesel imports is nearly 4.2 million gallons from Belgium.


The U.S. exported nearly 300.4 million gallons of biodiesel last year, up almost 65 percent from the 182.5 million gallons exported in 2021.



The U.S. exported more to Canada last year than all its exports combined for 2021.



In 2022, more than 189.6 million gallons went north to the neighboring country, up around 34 percent from the 141 million gallons sent to Canada in 2021.



In a first, Singapore secured second place for U.S. biodiesel exports in 2022, totaling 76.1 million gallons.



More than 22.7 million gallons of U.S. biodiesel went to Peru last year, up slightly from the nearly 20 million gallons shipped to the South American country in 2021.



The Netherlands received more than 8.6 million gallons of U.S. biodiesel in 2022, on par with the 2021 volume of approximately 8.3 million gallons.



Nearly 1.9 million gallons of U.S. biodiesel was sent to Norway last year.



The U.S. also exported approximately 1.1 million gallons of biodiesel to Germany in 2022.



Other, smaller export shipments last year included 126,000 gallons to Mexico, 42,000 gallons to Chili, and 42,000 gallons to Taiwan.
