Pertamina International Shipping announced Feb. 5 that it has demonstrated its commitment to supporting the Indonesian government’s program by using B40 fuel for shipping transportation.

A total of 189 vessels operated by Pertamina International Shipping for national energy distribution have been using this biodiesel fuel since January.

“In line with the directive from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), all 189 vessels operated by Pertamina International Shipping for national energy distribution have adopted B40 to achieve energy resilience while supporting green and sustainable energy,” said Muhammad Irfan Zainul Fikri, Pertamina International Shipping’s director of fleet management.

Irfan explained that this strategic step is part of Pertamina International Shipping’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and support the national energy transition.

B40 is a blend of 40 percent biodiesel and 60 percent petroleum-based fuel.

Pertamina International Shipping said since its inception B40 has proven to be more efficient in reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, offering a more environmentally friendly solution for the transportation sector, including the shipping industry.

The adoption of B40 aligns with Pertamina International Shipping’s long-term green vision to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Pertamina International Shipping said it continues to integrate sustainability principles into every operational aspect, focusing on energy efficiency, the use of ecofriendly technologies and the development of green energy-supporting infrastructure.

Pertamina International Shipping added that it has also implemented various green-technology innovations to support this vision.

One significant initiative is the use of energy-saving devices on several of its vessels.

Since its first implementation in 2022, ships equipped with this technology have shown a significant improvement in fuel efficiency.

Furthermore, Pertamina International Shipping has adopted dual-fuel technology, which allows the use of both alternative and fossil fuels either alternately or simultaneously.

This dual-fuel technology has been proven to save up to 30 percent of total vessel fuel consumption.

In its medium-term plan, Pertamina International Shipping said it is targeting a significant increase in its green-business contribution to 34 percent by 2034.

This effort is accompanied by an emission-reduction strategy of up to 32 percent by the same year, in line with the global commitments of the Indonesian government and the International Maritime Organization.

Pertamina International Shipping said its green commitment has also received recognition.

Currently, the company holds a BBB ESG score from Morgan Stanley Capital International, indicating the company’s solid performance in environmental, social and governance aspects.

Pertamina International Shipping said this achievement “is a clear testament” to its dedication to sustainable business practices.

“Going forward, we hope Pertamina International Shipping can become a leading player in the green-shipping industry, driving the transformation towards more environmentally friendly operations,” Irfan said. “This requires close collaboration between stakeholders and regulators to create a truly ecofriendly shipping-industry ecosystem.”
