Bolloré Logistics launches SEAalternative for less carbon-intensive shipping
Bolloré Logistics announced Nov. 28 the launch of SEAalternative, an offer to reduce carbon impact of ocean shipments thanks to the use of biofuel.
International Maritime Organization regulations aim to reduce ocean-freight CO2e emissions by 70 percent in 2050, compared to 2008.
Biofuel is one of the main levers to face this challenge.
Previously available through two carriers, the SEAalternative solution is now available on any trade lanes and any carriers for one exceptional shipment or on a contractual basis.
It can guarantee up to an 84 percent reduction in CO2e emissions compared to conventional shipping, with respect to the physical limit as per Smart Freight Center guidelines.
SEAalternative utilizes biofuel derived from used cooking oil, excluding palm oil.
According to Bolloré Logistics, this sustainable solution relies on an end-to-end seamless and verified process.
Bolloré Logistics allocates the biofuel environmental attributes to the client’s shipment depending on the need and provides quarterly declaration.
Carbon savings are then detailed in the client’s CO2e dashboard and audited annually by a third party.
“[Our] SEAalternative offer forms part of Bolloré Logistics’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, “Powering Sustainable Logistics,” launched in 2018, to provide sustainable supply-chain solutions to its clients,” said Odile Maarek, Bolloré Logistics’ organization, methods and CSR director. “The new greenhouse-gas (GHG) emission-reduction targets for Bolloré Logistics, in line with Science Based Targets initiative, are to reduce by 22 percent absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from downstream transportation and distribution by 2030 from a 2022 base year. Thus, Bolloré Logistics encourages its customers to integrate sustainability into the management of their activities.”
