Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. announced April 4 the successful completion of a biodiesel-blended marine biofuel bunkering on its capesize bulk carrier Midnight Dream.
In March, the vessel was supplied with about 1,000 tons of biofuel in Singapore, initiating MOL’s first biofuel utilization in collaboration with BHP Group Ltd. on its capesize bulk carrier.
Biofuel is made from biobased resources such as agricultural residues and waste cooking oil.
The biofuel bunkered this time is a blend of about 24 percent biodiesel (B24) with very-low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO).
The B24 blend of marine fuel is expected to cut about 750 tons of CO2 emissions.
Biofuel stands as an effective alternative to fossil fuels, offering lower carbon emissions.
Its compatibility with existing marine diesel engines and bunkering facilities ensures a smooth transition without requiring modifications.
MOL said it will continually take a proactive stance in advancing the adoption of clean alternative fuels with the aim of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions in ocean transport.
This is in line with MOL’s Blue Action 2035 environmental strategy.
