Motor Oil Group announced April 7 that the first delivery of marine biofuel in Greece by it and its company Coral Marine is a milestone in the effort to reduce emissions and promote the green transition in the shipping industry.
The delivery, which took place on the cruise ship Celestyal Discovery at the Port of Lavrio, is the first application of biofuel blends in the Greek market, according to Motor Oil Group.
Its use reduces CO2 emissions produced by the ship by approximately 21 percent, the company said.
The fuel blend consisted of fossil oil produced at Motor Oil’s refinery and biofuel produced in Greece as well at the group’s Verd plant from the processing of used cooking oil collected from the Greek market.
“The use of second-generation biofuels plays a crucial role in reducing the environmental burden,” the company stated.
“This biofuel reduces CO2 emissions and protects the environment by preventing soil and water degradation from waste of used cooking oil,” Motor Oil Group added.
The delivered fuel blend meets the strict specifications of ISO 8217:2024, ensuring compatibility and performance in the marine sector.
This move is in line with the international commitments of the shipping industry to reduce emissions, as defined by the International Maritime Organization strategy, while at the same time reinforcing sustainable-development policies in Greece and internationally.
