The Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster celebrated North Carolina’s most transformative cleantech achievements at the 2024 Cleantech Innovation Awards ceremony held Nov. 13 at the SAS Institute in Cary, North Carolina.

Among this year’s distinguished winners was ProcessWerx, which was awarded the Cleantech Impact: Water Award for its innovative fats, oils and grease (FOG) recovery and wastewater-treatment project designed for and provided to WM for its FOG2Fuel® Program

This project exemplifies a state-of-the-art cleantech solution by delivering real-world environmental, economic and community impacts.

Designed, built and commissioned by ProcessWerx for WM, the FOG2Fuel® system can handle up to 60,000 gallons of FOG wastewater per day.

This solution generates EPA-approved advanced biofuel and delivers treated wastewater suitable for safe sewer disposal.

This comprehensive approach ensures optimized waste management and wastewater treatment, enhancing both environmental compliance and operational sustainability.

“The successful implementation of the FOG2Fuel® project for WM is a testament to our 20 years of experience addressing complex waste challenges,” said William Smith, a principal engineer at ProcessWerx. “By combining advanced FOG recovery with robust wastewater treatment, we’re creating sustainable fuel in addition to safeguarding our water systems.”

The 2024 Cleantech Innovation Awards celebrated achievements across various categories, highlighting the collaborative efforts of public and private organizations, government agencies, academic institutions and entrepreneurs driving the growth of the cleantech economy.

Notable sponsors included Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader advancing sustainable energy, and SAS Institute, the host sponsor and global leader in artificial intelligence and analytics.

RTCC and its Cleantech Innovation Awards program continue to position North Carolina as a leader in sustainable innovation, supporting projects across water, energy, transportation and environmental sectors that shape a more resilient and sustainable future.

ProcessWerx is dedicated to expanding the availability of low-carbon feedstock for advanced biofuels by delivering cutting-edge technologies for FOG waste recovery.

It provides efficiently engineered solutions for complex waste and energy challenges across wastewater, agricultural, waste-to-energy and biofuels industries.
