PTT Global Chemical produces Thailand’s 1st sustainable aviation fuel
PTT Global Chemical Public Company Ltd., a leader in Thailand’s integrated chemical industry, announced Jan. 15 the successful launch of the first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production in the country.
In the first phase, Global Chemical plans to produce 6 million liters (nearly 1.6 million gallons) of SAF per year using UCO as the main raw material.
The company plans to expand production to 24 million liters (6.3 million gallons) per year in the future.
By using technology to improve the existing refinery in Map Ta Phut, Rayong, it can save investment compared to building a new plant.
“Today’s official commercial production of SAF is ready to support the rapidly expanding demand for renewable energy in the Thai commercial aviation industry and emphasizes the adoption of sustainable practices to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions in a tangible way,” said Tossaporn Boonyapipat, president of Global Chemical.
“Global Chemical’s SAF has been certified with the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification System’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, an international standard accepted in the aviation industry for sustainability certification and can reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by up to 80 percent compared to the use of conventional aviation fuel,” he said.
In addition, Global Chemical has also been certified with the ISCC Plus standard.
“Global Chemical has developed more than 10 high-value biobased products to meet the needs of environmentally conscious markets in various industries, such as the sustainable packaging industry, the automotive industry, and the textile industry, confirming our commitment to operating under the highest sustainability framework,” he said.
Global Chemical said it has prepared to meet market challenges and opportunities with three key strengths: modern infrastructure, personnel with expertise in oil refining, and efficient raw-material management by using domestic used cooking oil (UCO) to produce commercial SAF.
In addition, Global Chemical has established strategic partnerships with key partners in the aviation industry, which will enable it to maintain its SAF market share and play a key role in shaping the future direction of the commercial aviation and energy industries, the company said.
Global Chemical said collaboration between it and key partners such as OR and Thai Airways to use SAF on both domestic and international flights is an important step in developing a distribution network covering the region and setting a new standard for the environmentally friendly aviation industry.
