Ryanair purchases another 500 tons of SAF from OMV
Ireland-based airline Ryanair announced March 8 that it is purchasing another 500 metric tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Austria-based energy company OMV.
The news follows the air carrier’s purchase of 500 tons of SAF from OMV last October.
This most recent purchase of SAF will save more than 1,250 tons in CO2 emissions.
That is equivalent to approximately 100 Ryanair flights from Dublin, Ireland, to Vienna, Austria.
Ryanair and OMV signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in September.
Under the MOU agreement, Ryanair has access to purchase up to 160,000 tons of SAF from OMV up to 2030.
“We’re delighted to be taking an additional 500 tons of SAF from OMV this year, in addition to the 500 tons we agreed in October,” said Tom Fowler, Ryanair’s director of sustainability.
“SAF plays a key role in our ‘Pathway to Net Zero’ decarbonization strategy in which we have committed to increasing our use of over the coming years—a commitment that this deal with OMV will help move further forward,” Fowler added.
“OMV is a key partner for Ryanair in Austria, Germany and Romania and we look forward to growing this partnership as Europe’s largest airline group,” he said.
