Vitol completes its 1st delivery of marine biofuel in UAE
Vitol announced Dec. 19 that it has successfully completed its first biofuel deliveries in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.
Through its wholly owned bunker arm, Vitol Bunkers, two vessels received B24 marine biofuel Dec. 8 and Dec. 14.
Vitol said the deliveries demonstrate the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable fuel solutions.
The marine biofuel was a 24 percent blend of biodiesel mixed with very-low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO).
The VLSFO was sourced from Vitol’s Fujairah-based refinery FRL and blended with regionally sourced biofuel at VTTI storage facilities.
Certified biofuels are expected to play a key role in helping the hard-to-abate maritime sector to decarbonize and reduce greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions on a well-to-wake basis.
Marine biofuel can also actively reduce a vessel’s Carbon Intensity Indicator and count as a zero-CO2 emissions factor once shipping joins the EU’s Emissions Trading System in 2024, according to Vitol.
The deliveries coincided with COP28 held in Dubai.
“Vitol Bunkers thanks the port of Fujairah and the government of the UAE for their progressive sustainable policies that enabled the delivery to take place,” Vitol stated.
